Capital Lights bursts onto the scene with this catchy debut, releasing July 8. Sounding like a cross between Relient K and Hawk Nelson, the Tulsa quartet formerly known as afterEIGHT offers typical pop-punk music with more interesting lyrics than is usual for the genre. For example, the CD closes with "Frank Morris," a song about the historical escape from Alcatraz made famous by Clint Eastwood's movie Escape from Alcatraz. Until you realize the story, the lyrics might be a little puzzling:

lights out now it's half past nine / up the thirty foot corrider three men climb / it should have been four but one man's left behind / crawl from the rooftop down to the northern end / through the thickest fog to the water's edge / for the thrilling ride to be never seen again

The song "Return," about Christ's second coming, is less obscure:

be ready for deceivers / they claim 'I am the Christ' but have no heart //... like a stranger in the night / the rider shows His face so glowing / then heaven hums a new song / the lights grow dim

Every song on This Is An Outrage boasts catchy hooks, and Bryson Phillips' vocals are above average. Listen to this CD once and you'll find it hard not to go back to it repeatedly.
