Perceptions establishes This Beautiful Republic as one of the better young modern rock bands in Christian music. The growth since last year's debut, Even Heroes Need a Parachute, is evident throughout. Producer Allen Salmon (Mute Math) captures their dynamic live show, creating more of a rock feel in contrast to the more pop-oriented sounds of the first record, making the drums sound a little more prominent. There's plenty of variety from soft ballands to harder guitar-oriented rock, and as with "Going Under" from the last CD, they throw in a little screamo during "My God," a dynamic prayer of recommitment. The band's Christian faith is obvious in songs like "Beautifully Broken":
Beautifully broken in Your eyes / You see the man my sins disguise / You took my place / You saved my life / Miraculous love, sweet sacrifice / Beautifully broken / You were beautifully broken / So You see me as Your own / Holy in the light of Your redemption / By the blood and by the thorn / We're called to life
