Johnny Cash passed away five years ago, but like Elvis Presley, his popularity and record sales continue unabated. I was thrilled recently to discover Ultimate Gospel on iTunes for only $9.99. Whether it's classic hymns like "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder" and "How Great Thou Art" or Cash originals like "He Turned The Water Into Wine" and "The Great Speckled Bird," this collection has it all. The Carl Perkins' penned "Daddy Sang Bass" is a treat that I remember hearing in the early 70s at my cousins' house. Poignantly, "Far Side Banks of Jordan" features June Carter Cash singing,

but if it proves to be His will that I am first to cross / and somehow I have a feeling it will be

That was recorded about 25 years before she preceded Johnny in death by less than four months. Another highlight is "Here Was A Man," Johnny's spoken word tribute to Jesus Christ. If you're looking for classic countrified hymns and gospel tunes highlighted by that distinctive Johnny Cash voice, you can't go wrong with Ultimate Gospel.
