Christian music's perennial male vocalist of the year has released perhaps his finest album yet. Building on his five Dove Awards, Jeremy Camp's Speaking Louder Than Before debuted at 38th on the Billboard 200, and came out as the number one Christian album. The polished project delivers the expected radio-friendly light rock and ballads that made him famous.
Like many artists, he rocks a little harder live, but producer Brown Bannister has mastered the art of recording melodic pop rock that works perfectly for K-Love and Way-FM audiences. From the initial hits "There Will Be A Day" and "Slow Down Time" to the worshipful "Capture Me" and the ballad "Surrender," Camp fans will have plenty to enjoy. I especially enjoyed the rocking "Give You All Control," which sounds the most like his earlier material and will be a crowd rouser live.
Camp has always been serious about ministry, so it's no surprise that a ministry called Speaking Louder Ministries has been launched along with the album. It seeks to unite concert-goers with local churches and ministries by sharing information and having fans bring food or goods as a donation to help those ministries. Thus far it has been a great success, and ministries will be lining up to partner with Speaking Louder when Jeremy Camp visits their city. It's great to see practical applications of ministry like this, much as Steven Curtis Chapman has done with adoption--concerts can inspire listeners, but this way the application is immediate and will hopefully lead to continued involvement with those local ministries. More artists should follow this model.
