I first met Todd Agnew in 2004 when I interviewed him at the Gospel Music Association annual conference. He struck me as a current-day Rich Mullins, someone who was more interested in truth than stardom. I've since ended up mentioning Mullins in just about every Todd Agnew review, and this one is no exception. The second track on Need, "I Wish You Still Spoke," is reminiscent of Mullins, and "Did You Mean Me?" offers poignant Mullins-style lyrics:

Did You mean me when You said, we were made in your image / because I don’t see much of you in this reflection / did You mean me, when You said we would do even greater things / because I don’t see anything that I have to offer You / did You mean me?

This album shines with makeovers of classic hymns. Agnew's powerful baritone perfectly fits "I Need No Other Argument," imbuing it with passion. "Take The World But Give Me Jesus" gets a country musical vibe and then "Higher Ground" adds a soaring gospel choir to make it my favorite track on Need. "Tell Me The Story" gets a rock facelift that builds to a scorching guitar solo.

The beautiful praise song "Gloria" follows and then "The Love of God," a prayerful light rock version of the classic hymn, precedes the rocking "Breakable," a perfect Christmas tune of praise. "The Deep Love of Jesus" brings a toe-tapping tent revival feel to the 19th century hymn and then "Jesus, The Hope of Glory" ends Need on a prayerful note of thanks:

I called out with a troubled heart and justice heard my cry / Oh, Jesus, He heard the groaning of my soul / Jesus, no one higher / no one greater / no name sweeter

When it comes to beautiful worshipful music that doesn't fit the "modern worship" pigeonhole, Todd Agnew's Need is as good as it gets.
