Blessid Union of Souls has reached the Top 40 more than half a dozen times since the band's first album came out in 1995. With the release of The Mission Field, the faith of co-founder and lead vocalist Eliot Sloan takes center stage. From the guitar-driven light rock of "Sweet Providence" and the pop worship of "The Only Song" to the traditional hymn sounds of the title track, the overtly spiritual album expresses Sloan's worldview.

I especially enjoyed the powerful emotion and exhortation in "Hold On," and the hope (and the guitar solo!) of "I Still Believe In Love." "Higher Calling" is a rousing call to action, and the album's last few tracks include two fine power ballads: "Come Undone" and "Back From The Dead."

The Mission Field surprised me because I found myself wanting to listen to it more than I originally expected. Sloan's vocals and lyrics mixed with quality music make this an above-average project that will appeal to any fans of quality pop/light rock.
