J Moss has been a force in gospel/soul music for over a decade as one-third of the PAJAM production team (also working with mainstream stars like Patti LaBelle and Boyz II Men), butThe J Moss Project is his chance to step in front of the microphone. With a strong tenor voice, he mixes gospel/soul music with hip hop flavor. It's actually a little surprising how traditional much of the CD sounds, but it certainly has its cutting edge moments. I normally prefer more of a rock/modern worship sound, but J Moss definitely caught my ear with this CD.

We Must Praise reminded me of the Steve Camp/Larry Norman collaboration of the mid-70s, If I Were a Singer:

If I were a drummer, I would use my cymbal / If I were a writer, I would use a pencil / I would use my voice, if I were a singer / No matter who or what we are, we must praise...Let the people of God bless Him / Let it ring with love and truth / With our gifts we exalt Thee / Merciful, wonderful God / We must praise

Norman and Camp wrote, "If I were a singer, I'd sing my songs to you..." in a very different style, but with the same theme of praise to God. This album is primarily praise and worship, but also touches on themes like dealing with the temptation of lust in Livin' 4. I've got one word for The J Moss Project: smooth. This is one classy CD by a very talented performer who loves the Lord and wants to spread the good news.
