The Passion conferences and artists have lead the way in modern worship for the past couple of years. TheHymns Ancient & Modern-Songs of Our Faith project hearkens back to traditional hymns with more contemporary music, but generally retaining the feel of the originals. The usual Passion "lead worshippers" such as David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, and Charlie Hall are joined by Matt Redman and Christy Nockels (Watermark) on these classics that date back at least a century. An exception is Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee, which is only 96 years old, but qualified since the tune originated with Beethoven's 9th Symphony, written in 1824. The oldest song is Phos Hilaron (Hail Gladdening Light)--we know it dates back to at least the 4th century, and is believed to date from 200 A.D.; it is the oldest known Christian hymn outside of Scripture.
Hymns Ancient & Modern-Songs of Our Faith will bless all who appreciate modern worship, as well as those who cherish great hymns of the past. Passion songs hold 9 of the top 20 spots of songs licensed for church services; this project should provide more Top 20 material that will bless congregations of all ages.
