In just one listen, Coming Up to Breathe became my favorite MercyMe album. With lyrical and musical variety, passionate vocals and plenty of guitars, this project will win over new listeners while satisfying existing MercyMe fans.
The record begins with the title track, which quickly establishes that MercyMe is going for more of a rock feel than they have in the past. The songs include a variety after that, but as always, Bart Millard's vocals define the band's signature sound on this mostly up-tempo effort.
While Coming Up to Breathe provides musical and lyrical variety, the one constant is quality. I expect this to be MercyMe's most popular album since their debut. After all, any record featuring I Can Only Imagine is unlikely to be surpassed.
