Hello Kelly is the latest in the line of Ontario, Canada bands that includes Hawk Nelson, Thousand Foot Krutch, Red Umbrella and Manic Drive. This label debut includes some of their prior EP tracks along with new tunes penned by frontman Francy Goudreault.
The CD kicks off with the rousing "10 Good Reasons," addressing our feelings of inadequacy before God. The remaining dozen songs are characterized by above-average songwriting, often involving emo topics like girlfriends who just might be in love with everyone else. "Favorite Arcade" and "Paper Bag Princess (Hey Elizabeth)" are a couple of songs reprised from the band's earlier EPs. I love the imagery of the latter song:
Cause I'm standing in my tinfoil armour / My dollar store broad sword is by your side / But you give away your heart because you think you're ugly / So let me hold your arm / Hey Elizabeth / I'm just a peasant school boy / But I've been waiting a long time to hold your hand / Or something like that / I'm not a soldier and I'm not a king / But I can play a mean guitar / And you can talk to me about almost anything / Without worrying.../ If we put our faith into God above / Then He will protect us both and He'll keep us strong / As long as we've got love / And we've got love
Hello Kelly is a fun collection of catchy pop punk/emo-flavored songs that stick in your head, far surpassing pretty much every other debut by Christian bands with a similar sound.
