Charlie Daniels is a country legend, with over 40 albums to his credit. On Songs From The Longleaf Pines, Daniels is joined by country stalwarts such as Earl Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs. This gospel bluegrass collection features impressive bluegrass musicianship compelling me to enjoy songs that are not my usual listening style.
Daniels and friends perform a couple of songs by Bill Monroe, a not unexpected instrumental version of I'll Fly Away, and the beloved hymn, How Great Thou Art. However, my favorite track is Keep On The Sunny Side, featuring Earl Scruggs and his legendary banjo work. The album also includes a couple of Scripture recitations from the Psalms, and will leave listeners with the impression that Daniels wants this album to be a lot of fun, while making an unambiguous statement of faith. He succeeds on both counts.
