The Nativity Story
DVD
New Line Home Entertainment, 2006.

Rated PG
Includes both widescreen and full screen versions
101 minutes (includes English & Spanish subtitles)

The Nativity Story DVD should sell well, as it does a fine job with many aspects of the Christmas story. I just wish the project had not been as rushed, as the quality is somewhat uneven. The early scenes are captivating, providing a perspective on the timeless tale that seems historically plausible, although the Romans are perhaps a little too villainous. Thankfully, we don't have blue-eyed blonde Nordic actresses portraying Mary and her mother. The characters actually look Middle Eastern, and the portrayal of village life seems believable.

Although I dislike the appearance of the wise men at the manager (not historically accurate), the way they are portrayed will please most viewers, even though they most likely traveled on horseback with numerous cavalry guarding them, rather than making a lonely journey by camel. A big positive is the portrayal of Mary's pregnancy as being supernatural, and the resulting ostracism she faces in her village.

By the time we get to Bethlehem, there's a bit too much of a living Christmas card feeling, but that's not enough to overshadow the fine performance of Oscar Isaac as Joseph, who gets my vote for the best portrayal in the movie.

The DVD includes widescreen and fullscreen versions, but no real special features. Perhaps those will come in a future deluxe edition.
